Christina Lewicky-Gaupp, MD, FACOG, FACS, has returned to the University of Chicago Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as a Professor in the Section of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery.
Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp completed her bachelor’s in Biology and Russian Literature at Wellesley College and received her medical degree from Rush Medical College. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago and fellowship in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at the University of Michigan. After her subspeciality training, Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp began her career as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University and quicky put her clinical, research, and teaching talents to use.
In 2011, Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp founded the Peripartum Evaluation and Assessment of the Pelvic Floor around the Time of Delivery (PEAPOD) Maternal Recovery Clinic at Northwestern Memorial and Lake Forest hospitals. PEAPOD was one of the first clinic models successfully established to address peripartum care during pregnancy and before the standard six-week postpartum visit. The clinic now serves as the international gold-standard of care for birth injuries. Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp’s expertise in peripartum care has led to an outstanding record of publications, workshops, and invited talks to educate clinicians on the latest treatments that enable faster recovery and improve quality of life. As a new faculty member at the University of Chicago, Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp will establish our own PEAPOD clinic to care for women with perineal and vaginal injuries caused by childbirth.
Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp has also received several private- and NIH-funded grants to advance urogynecologic surgery and postpartum recovery research. Her primary areas of focus are on clinical and surgical outcomes and prevention and management of maternal birth injury.
Medical education and training the next generation of urogynecologic surgeon-scientists is of the utmost importance to Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp. She is an active contributor to both clinical training and education research to ensure trainees acquire the appropriate skillsets to safely operate and treat future patients. At Northwestern, she has served as the Assistant and Associate Residency Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Program, Director of the Resident Gynecologic Surgical Simulation Program, and Associate Director of the Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program. She has already put an application in for a new Urogynecology fellowship U of C.
