Dr. Sarah Collins returns to Section of Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery

Sarah Collins, MD, FACOG, FACS, has returned to the University of Chicago Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as an Associate Professor in the Section of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery.

Dr. Collins received her bachelor’s in English Literature at Cornell University and her medical degree from Wayne State University. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at MetroHealth/Cleveland Clinic, after which she completed fellowship training in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at Hartford Hospital/University of Connecticut Health Center in 2011.

Upon completing her subspeciality training, Dr. Collins joined the Section of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago. She then joined the urogynecology team at Northwestern University in 2016. While at Northwestern, Dr. Collins was an active leader throughout her division, department, and institution. She led the development and integration of computer-based decisional aids into routine clinical workflow, improving the quality of patient counseling as well as practice efficiency. She served as one of the core members of the CARE Clinic team, which treats women and girls with congenital differences of the urogenital tract. Dr. Collins is a federally funded researcher with a special interest in shared decision-making and surgical innovation.

Dr. Collins is a leader in the publication of national and international clinical guideline statements and terminology documents and chairs the Terminology and Standardization Committee for the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA). She is an experienced clinical educator both locally and globally. Through her work with the International Organization for Women and Development, she travels annually to Kigali, Rwanda to provide surgical care for women with obstetric fistula and clinical and surgical training to Rwandan physicians.

At the University of Chicago, Dr. Collins’ clinical practice will focus on minimally invasive surgery for pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, congenital Mullerian differences, and complex urogenital fistulas. She also will continue her work advancing shared decision-making in women’s health and will implement computer-based decisional aids into clinical practice in the Section of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at UChicago Medicine. She will establish a practice in Hinsdale.
